The Shepherds

John Shepherd was one of my great great grandfathers. He was born in 1847 the second known child of George Shepherd and Fanny Wright. I haven't found the family yet in the 1851 census, but by 1861 they can be found at 6 Scotland Yard, Nottingham. John was then employed, aged 13, as a Paste Board Maker, so he obviously began his career in the paper box industry at a young age ! The table below gives the details from the 1861 census. (RG9/2456 Folio 50)

John's father George Shepherd was a labourer and may have had to move about quite a bit to find work, as his children were baptised in several different parishes - Barrow on Soar, Calverton & Clifton. George Shepherd had married Fanny Wright in 1840 at Prestwold in Leicestershire although it says on the certificate that he was a resident of Hoton and she was resident at Loughborough at the time. They had their last two known children in Calverton in 1850 and 1851, so I hope to be able to find them there on the 1851 census. George seems to have died sometime between the 1861 and 1881 censuses. I have found what I think is Fanny living as a widow in Nottingham in the 1881 census, lodging with a Mary A. Boat and family.

George was born in 1817 at Seagrave, the son of William Shepherd and Elizabeth Whittington. William & Elizabeth had married in 1796, at Sileby, which appears to be Elizabeth's home parish as she was baptised there according to the IGI.

Not much is known yet about William Shepherd, other than he was also a labourer, and also seemed to have moved parishes from Walton on the Wold, to Seagrave, to Barrow-upon-Soar.

The family tree below summarises what I know about the Shepherd family. It is hopefully reasonably accurate, but if you spot any errors, or any relatives, please feel free to E-mail me
